A team of 20 HTCNJ volunteers recently spent one week in mid-February in Trujillo, Peru, providing ophthalmology surgery for children at the Instituto Regional de Oftalmologic.   (I.R.O.)   Dr. Nancy Suarez of the I.R.O. hosted our team for the second year in a row.  Our team was led by Dr. Bruce Schnall and Ms. Diane Calesnick, and provided surgery for strabismus, ptosis, cataracts and other pediatric ophthalmic conditions.

The HTCNJ team screened 58 children at the I.R.O., and provided surgery at no charge for 48 children. In addition, several members of the Healing the Children NJ team gave lectures to the doctors and medical students on subjects related to pediatric ophthalmology.

At the end of the week, team members conducted a pediatric ophthalmology screening clinic at the Policlinico Vergen de las Cruces in Alto Trujillo.  Refractions were provided for 92 children, and 18 children received new eyeglasses from Healing the Children NJ.  The team also distributed Personal Care Kits to children and their families, which were assembled by children attending The Pingry School , in Short Hills NJ, and donated to HTCNJ.

Mr. Kevin Hurley of The Medical Elective Network, an organization based in Trujillo assisted the HTCNJ team with logistics on this trip. We have partnered with Mr. Hurley and Medical Electives for several years, and their assistance is invaluable!

Many thanks to the numerous individuals who were involved with making our 2015 Ophthalmology trip to Trujillo a success!
