Healing the Children New Jersey (HTCNJ) sent a medical team to Guayaquil, Ecuador in October 2016 that performed over 70 cataract and ptosis surgeries on children. Dr. Richard Tipperman, a renowned ophthalmologist at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, PA. led the volunteer team which included a pediatrician and a group of anesthesiologists, nurses, and administrators.

HTCNJ worked in conjunction with Hospital Leon Becerra in Guayaquil to evaluate the children in preparation for the mission. Cataracts in children exist as a result of a birth defect or childhood trauma. Many of the eyes that the medical team examined exhibited well-formed cataracts that put up a barrier between the child and the outside world.Ā

The trip was made possible by the generosity of Alcon, a global leader in eye care. Alcon donated state-of-the-art cataract equipment and supplies. Non-profit organizations including Medwish International, Americares, and Map International/Ethicon also provided the necessary medical supplies and medications.
