HTCNJ Makes an Impact in Ecuador

In June 2018 HTCNJ sent twenty-seven volunteers to Guayaquil to provide free surgical care to children born with eye misalignment.  At the Leon Becerra Hospital the team screened 202 children and performed 184 procedures on 109 children.  They also ran a refraction clinic and purchased fifty-seven eyeglasses for needy children.  The children and their families travelled from forty-seven cities in Ecuador seeking medical treatment from American doctors.  Dr. Bruce Scnhall led a team of leading ophthalmologists including: Dr. Jay Calesnick, Dr. Mary O’Hara, Dr. Amy Wexler, and Dr. Maureen Lloyd.

“If left untreated, strabismus could lead to permanent damage and even vision loss, as well as negatively affect a child’s emotional health, social relationships, and self-image,” says Dr. Jay Calesnick, an ophthalmologist on the trip.

“My dream was achieved today when my son had his operation.  I am grateful for these angels,” said a patient’s mother.
