In January 2017 Dr. Bruce Schnall, an ophthalmologist located in Voorhees, New Jersey along with a team of twenty-seven volunteers screened nearly 200 patients and performed surgeries on 124 children with strabismus in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The medical team saw fifty-two post-op patients from HTCNJ’s 2015 trip for eye exams and photos, and examined two blind children with Barron’s disease.

During the weeklong trip, the medical team received a special visit from Todd C. Chapman, US Ambassador to Ecuador, where they were recognized for profoundly impacting the lives of Ecuadorian children.

“Surgery to correct eye misalignment is a life altering event for these children and their families. I truly believe that we dramatically improved 124 lives on this Healing the Children New Jersey medical mission,” said Dr. Schnall.

The medical team was hosted by Hospital Leon Becerra and supported by Berkeley College and The Association of Surgical Technicians.
