What is Healing the Children® New Jersey?

Healing the Children® New Jersey is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1981.  Learn more on our About Page.

Who does Healing the Children® New Jersey help?

HTCNJ provides care to needy children in all 21 counties of New Jersey as well as throughout the world.  We have traveled to 16 countries with volunteer surgical teams, and we have brought children from 100 countries to New Jersey to provide them with donated medical care they would not otherwise receive in their native lands.

How many children does Healing the Children® New Jersey help?

HTCNJ has provided care to 33,000 children since 1981. We help nearly 1,000 children each year.

How can I help?

  • HTCNJ welcomes cash contributions.  Gifts may be made in memory of or in honor of your loved ones.
  • Host a child from overseas who is traveling to New Jersey to receive medical care.  We will provide education, training, support and connect you with experienced Host Families.
  • Conduct a collection drive; this is a good service project for any service organization, youth group, scout troop, etc.
  • Invite us to make a presentation at your office, fraternal organization, service club or house of worship.

How much of your funds are allocated to fund raising and administrative expenses?

HTCNJ is a very efficient steward of donated funds.  Over 90% of donations are allocated directly to programs and services, with less than 10% utilized for fund raising and administrative expenses.

Who are the leaders of your organization?

HTCNJ is led by an all-volunteer Board of Trustees, one Trustee Emeritus and one Honorary Trustee. The charity employs two professional staff members.

Is Healing the Children® New Jersey similar to Smile Train?

HTCNJ’s care ranges among many medical specialties. Locally, we help poor NJ children who have complex medical diagnoses and developmental disabilities.  In our Medical Teams Abroad program, we provide care to impoverished children in the specialties of plastic & reconstructive surgery, urology, ophthalmology, ear/nose/throat, dentistry, general pediatric surgery and orthopedics.  Smile Train’s mission is focused on solving a single problem: cleft lip and cleft palate.

So, is Healing the Children® New Jersey like Doctors Without Borders?
HTCNJ is not a disaster-response organization, and our programs specifically aid only children. Doctors Without Borders delivers emergency medical assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, natural disasters, or exclusion from health care.
